Unique Approach to Improving Health and Literacy Among Urban Youth
AMERICA SCORES LA'S after-school youth development program offers a unique combination of athletics, arts and academics to address rising obesity and pervasively low literacy rates that disproportionately affect children in low-income communities.
ASLA cultivates literacy and leadership skills that enable disadvantaged youth to excel in both school and life. The comprehensive poetry, community service, and soccer curriculum serves over 450 students in four schools every evening for 10 weeks each semester and has a 17-year track record in the Palms community of Los Angeles.
America SCORES LA inspires under-served youth to transform their thoughts into words, their words into action and to take on leadership roles in the community at large.
The program is provided at no cost to the schools, students or parents and consists of three core components, each emphasizing the importance of teamwork:
- Soccer
- Power of Poetry writing workshops and
- Writing for the Community service-learning projects
With the unifying value of teamwork, ASLA inspires youth to lead healthy lifestyles, be engaged students and become agents of change in their communities.
An unexpected outcome is the growth of their alumni community, which serves as a funnel for volunteer coaches. These alumni are giving back to the program they received as elementary school students—a true success story!
