LIKE MANY PEOPLE, WE LEARNED some important lessons about our economy from the Great Recession of 2008. Over-leveraged banks got bailed out by the taxpayers while regular people were hit hard. We had been with one of the big banks for decades, but decided to move our money after learning about their harmful practices. Our research led us to various credit unions and smaller banks, among them Beneficial State Bank, a B Corp that offers a new, stable model for the banking industry.
Beneficial State Bank is majority-owned by the nonprofit Beneficial State Foundation, which advises financial institutions on how to implement more equitable and environmentally regenerative practices. Beneficial State Bank offers a mission-impact alternative to banks that support activities such as private prisons or fracking. The bank also practices transparency and equally prioritizes people, our planet, and prosperity for all.
