Local Initiative Utilizes Backyard Food Surplus, Strengthens Communities
IN THE BACKYARD OF OUR FIRST HOME in Los Angeles, an avocado tree produced creamy yields of such bounty we could never keep up no matter how much guacamole we made. It seemed a shame to let all that fruit rot. It’s especially troubling today when 30 percent of the population in LA County lacks sufficient access to affordable, nutritious food.
Food Forward puts your fruit tree surplus to good use by sending volunteers to rescue the excess produce from your backyard. They also recover otherwise wasted produce from weekly farmers markets and the Downtown Los Angeles Wholesale Produce Market. One hundred percent is distributed, free of charge, to community organizations. Through its various partners, Food Forward recovers and donates enough produce each day to meet the USDA's recommended servings of fruits and vegetables for nearly 250,000 people.
Food Forward’s work strengthens communities (and biceps!) as volunteers and neighbors work side-by-side to bring high quality nutrition to people in need. To date, Food Forward has recovered and donated over 385 million pounds of fresh produce to over 250 hunger relief agencies throughout eight California counties, six nearby states and tribal lands.
