Uniting for Food Equity: Hollywood Food Coalition's Journey to a Better Community
HOLLYWOOD FOOD COALITION NOURISHES THE COMMUNITY and unites efforts to achieve food equity. Since 1987, the Community Dinner program has served free meals to unhoused and low-income neighbors every night of the year. Responding to the increasing need for food, HoFoCo serves an average of 250 meals daily—over 91,000 meals in 2023 alone. HoFoCo emphasizes nutritionally complete, restaurant-like meals, and the importance of choice, which they see as the first step in building trust with dinner guests.
HoFoCo collaborates with service providers through their Community Wellness program, providing on-site health and vision care (UCLA Mobile Clinics), housing navigation (Housing Works), ID document recovery (Project ID), substance use counseling (Community Health Project LA), and hygiene/clothing services (Project Ropa). In 2023, HFC connected over 400 dinner guests to additional services.
HoFoCo’s Community Exchange program rescues surplus food that would otherwise go to landfills and distributes it to a network of over 160 small nonprofits in LA. In 2023, HoFoCo rescued almost 2.6 million pounds of food from restaurants, local businesses, corporations and wholesalers.
For 32 of their 37 years, HoFoCo has been a fully volunteer-led organization. Your donation of time or money will go a long way in improving access to food and restoring dignity to our less fortunate neighbors.
