Art Programs Teach Kids About Waste and Gives Powerful Skills
All children deserve access to arts education, and more than ever, they need opportunities to acquire problem solving skills equal to the challenges their generation faces. reDiscover is providing this access to over 10,000 youth “tinkerers” per year by operating “maker- spaces” at schools, farmers markets, community centers and other locations. Each makerspace is stocked with mountains of donated recycled and reused materials, along with professional-grade crafting and woodworking tools. reDiscover’s flagship makerspace is in Venice, with a second permanent location in Mid-City.
Many parents send their young tinkerers to reDiscover’s fee-based programs and camps. reDiscover provides scholarships to low-income families to ensure access for all children. For the general public, reDiscover hosts free maker activities in collaboration with community partners such as libraries, festivals, farmers markets and business districts. Their largest summer program, Cardboard City, serves thousands of visitors with a free kid-friendly exhibit of cardboard art and hands-on activities.
reDiscover’s staff of Teaching Artists love sharing their expertise, enthusiasm and cultural connections. reDiscover is committed to paying a living wage to all employees. By putting real tools into young hands, reDiscover is helping empower generations of Angelenos to become creative, environmentally responsible innovators.
