Targeted Environmental Education Cultivates New Generation of Leaders
FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS, Wildwoods has provided nature-based programs for children and families across Los Angeles. Beyond traditional "environmental education," Wildwoods works at the nexus of natural science and social science.
Founded as a response to the Columbine school shooting, their mission is social, not environmental. "We use ecology and the outdoor experience as a framework for human relations," says founder and executive director Dwain Wilson. "We're not saving nature. Nature is saving us."
"We believe that access to nature is a human right. It's an issue of equity and of social and environmental justice," says Dwain. "Exposure to nature and green space is a critical component of children's cognitive and social-emotional development. Sadly, not every child has the same opportunity for that exposure. That's where we come in."
In recent years, Wildwoods' work has evolved to include a focus on nature's role in community wellness with SeedLinks, an urban home gardener support network, and Healthy Trails, collaboration with the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.
Even in the midst of a global pandemic, Wildwoods has found ways to help urban families connect with the natural world around them—and with each other.
